What you do, when you've built your plane.
Avalon Airshow 2025
We finally succeeded this time. We failed in 2023 and ended up driving over, but this time WE WERE GONNA FLY IN! I wrote this for the benefit of the Adelaide Soaring Club. I apologise for a couple of the jokes, but only a little bit.
I know that I am not the first, it's not the longest, highest, fastest or slowest. But for me it is most definitely an ‘est’.
I flew my little yellow Sonex to the Avalon Airshow that I scratch built in my shed over a six year period. Anyone who has flown away on trips with me knows that I never fly for very long. A little fuel tank means that my fuel range is less than my bladder. Thank goodness I have never done a Schuster, you know what I am talking about! My long flights really are a combination of short ones, usually only a couple of hours at the most. If you need help understanding the complexities of foreign fuel pumps, come and have a talk with me….I think that I have been to most of ‘em.
The five Musketeers set off first thing on Thursday morning destined for Horsham, or maybe Naracoorte. If necessary we would have flown to Avalon via Perth if the weather was going to stop us this time. I could feel that Galah Award peeking over my shoulder the whole way. Bradley in his Jabiru SK, Jamie Clothier in his SP500, Hans in his Jabiru J160…well almost. Hans had to pull out at the last moment as instead of his wheel falling off it was only the right hand brake assembly. Ask Steve Miranda how well that works! This meant that Hans and I squeezed into my Sonex. The ever reliable Kayla and Taylor Swift drove over to provide ground support for us lazy buggers who hate walking.
